THE SIDELINES : Prost Quits McLaren Racing Team
Alain Prost announced today that he will not be driving for the McLaren team with which he won two titles.
“I have always understood that McLaren would need to reach an early decision as to whether it would be mutually beneficial to renew our contract beyond the end of the season,” Prost said. “I have decided I am not going to drive for McLaren next year.”
Prost said it was a not an easy decision.
“Mansour Oijeh (the chairman of the TAG-McLaren group) wanted to have a quick decision, and I was not very comfortable to make a decision at this time of the year.”
“He was making a decision this early for the benefit of the team,” Ron Dennis, the McLaren team chief, said.
