Canada Protests U.S. Seizure of Trawlers
From Associated Press
WASHINGTON —
The government of Canada filed a protest Friday with the State Department demanding the release of two Canadian trawlers seized by the U.S. Coast Guard in waters claimed by the United States off southeastern Alaska.
Richard Boucher, a State Department spokesman, said the vessels were escorted to the port of Ketchikan after being boarded Wednesday in “U.S. territorial waters near the tip of the Alaska panhandle.”
The crews will be charged with illegal fishing, Boucher added.
