North Dakota Declared Drought Disaster Area

BISMARCK, N.D. — Officials declared a statewide drought disaster in North Dakota on Wednesday, the first step in making farmers eligible for federal assistance.
“The 1988 drought never really ended, although we had some relief until just a few weeks ago,” Lt. Gov. Lloyd Omdahl said. He announced the disaster declaration for Gov. George Sinner, who was out of the state.
“Congress is currently debating a 1989 drought relief package, so we want to send them an appropriate message regarding our needs,” Omdahl said.
