P. M. BRIEFING : Aeroflot Seeks IATA Membership
The Soviet national airline Aeroflot, the biggest in the world with more than 3,000 aircraft, applied today to join the Geneva-based International Air Transport Assn.
IATA Director General Gunther Eser welcomed the application from Soviet Civil Aviation Minister Aleksander Volkov.
“It is by far the biggest airline in the world and will play an important role within IATA,” Eser said in a statement.
IATA, which now has 185 member carriers, coordinates airline security, safety standards, catering and other services and also acts as a financial clearinghouse for exchanging currencies. It no longer is involved in fixing fares.
