SAN DIEGO SYMPHONY BRIEF

Share

Heiichiro Ohyama will conduct the San Diego Symphony in the Sept. 9 concert for the Symphony Towers opening celebration. Ohyama, assistant conductor and principal violist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, also is artistic director of La Jolla Chamber Music Society’s annual SummerFest. The symphony had previously named the two guest soloists--cellists Lynn Harrell and Mstislav Rostropovich--but no conductor was announced until Tuesday. On the program, Ohyama will conduct the first half: Copland’s “Fanfare for the Common Man” and Richard Strauss’ “Don Quixote,” with Harrell as soloist. For the concert’s second half, Rostropovich will both conduct and solo in Shostakovich’s First Cello Concerto.
