From Times wire services

The Centers for Disease Control urged today that states begin reporting not only people who have AIDS but those infected with the virus who have not yet developed symptoms of the disease.

Although health departments in all 50 states require doctors and AIDS testing centers to report actual cases of AIDS, only 28 states require reporting of those infected with the virus but who have not yet developed the disease.

Reporting of infected people “may enable earlier recognition of persons with, or at risk for, infection and earlier intervention to prevent further spread” of AIDS, the CDC report said.

Of the 28 states that report AIDS infections, 18 require that the name of the individual be reported. The 10 others allow anonymous testing.
