THE SIDELINES : Pirates’ Redus Put on Disabled List
The Pirates put first baseman Gary Redus on the 15-day disabled list today.
Redus was struck just below the left eye Monday by a 90-m.p.h. fastball thrown by Dodgers’ reliever Tim Crews. He was released Tuesday from Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh.
X-rays and a brain scan Monday revealed that Redus suffered no fractures and that his vision was not affected. He has a sore spot on his left forearm, indicating that it might have absorbed some of the blow, team physician Jack Failla said.
Redus, 1-for-2 with an RBI on Monday, did not accompany the Pirates to New York on Tuesday for the start of a seven-game road trip. He is batting .280 with three homers and 18 RBIs.
The Pirates said Redus went on the disabled list retroactive to Tuesday.
