Authorities in one of China’s most reform-minded cities, Shenzhen, said Thursday that they have fired the local university’s president for making serious mistakes during the pro-democracy movement, suggesting that he was judged too sympathetic to the student protesters.

The local government office, reached by telephone, said Shenzhen University President Luo Zhengqi, who is also the local Communist Party chief, was fired from both posts Saturday.
