‘Philosophical Baggage’ of Evolution
Well, I see that the Bible-thumpers are at it again. The Rev. Louis Sheldon of the Traditional Values Coalition claims that public school science classes should offer a “balanced viewpoint” on the origins of life.
What is there to balance? Evolution is a scientific fact. Creationism is a biblical myth. They have no place in the same discipline.
Sheldon also said that students should have “access” to the “scientific evidence” for both “creationism and evolution.” How can that be done? There is no scientific evidence for creationism.
And what does the California State Board of Education say? Well, its chairman, Francis Laufenberg, said that referring to evolution as a scientific fact is “inconsistent” with board policy. Is he trying to tell us that the board disagrees with the facts? Just once I would like to see an education spokesman with the courage to tell Christian fundamentalists to stop trying to impose their superstitions on everyone else.
