Owners of mid-size American manufacturing businesses pay themselves an average of $167,000 annually in direct and indirect compensation, the most among six industry groups, according to a recent study of U.S. private companies by the Geneva Cos. Other groups were, by pay ranking, business services, construction, wholesale/distribution, transportation/communications, and retailing.
The study also found that Orange County ranked eighth among the top 10 metropolitan areas in the nation in total compensation for business owners, at $224,000. Top in the nation was Stamford, Conn., at $273,000; last was Santa Barbara, at $65,000.
Geneva, a financial services organization based in Irvine, went through the books of about 2,500 mid-size, privately held U.S. businesses with annual revenues from $1 million to $100 million. It also conducted confidential business evaluations of all the companies.
