Argentine President Carlos Saul Menem, in the second gesture of conciliation toward Britain in less than 24 hours, said that Argentina will tone down the U.N. debate over the disputed Falkland Islands. Menem’s announcement came after his government said that Argentina is ending a ban on British imports imposed at the start of the 1982 war over the sparsely populated, wind-swept islands off the Argentine coast. Britain ended its ban on Argentine imports in 1985. The new Argentine leader said that instead of taking up the Falkland Islands issue at the U.N. General Assembly, as it has in the past, Argentina will limit the issue to the U.N. Decolonization Committee.
