Executive to Leave Over Safra Affair: A top American Express Co. executive said he plans to retire because of “mistakes made on my watch” that led the company to issue an unusual public apology to international banker Edmund J. Safra. Harry L. Freeman, 57, said that he planned to retire as executive vice president of corporate affairs and communications by year’s end. Freeman would be the first American Express employee to leave his job as a result of the company’s admission that people acting on its behalf had been involved in a campaign to discredit Safra.
