Import Protest

Your July 30 editorial “What Price Honor?” regarding the naming of the convention center is off the mark. I don’t believe that changing one’s mind to satisfy the vast majority of San Diegans is a dishonorable thing to do. I think it is the responsible thing to do.

In January, when I told the City Council I would go along with whatever they wanted to name the convention center, my thinking was that the Port District, as landlord, should allow the city of San Diego, as tenant, to select the name.

Since that time, the public has informed me and my fellow commissioners by letters, phone calls and personal contacts that they did not want their convention center named after anyone, and that they wanted to retain the name San Diego Convention Center. I realized that this was an issue that was so important to San Diego that a commitment I made to the City Council to name the convention center after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. could not be kept.
