Miners in the northern Soviet city of Vorkuta staged a one-day strike but agreed to return to work after officials gave them written guarantees of concessions, the official news agency Tass said. Workers at 11 of the 13 mines in the Arctic region stayed home, expressing fears that management might go back on pledges on pay, work conditions and other issues made after a major mine strike swept the country last month. However, the news agency said that management then produced government documents detailing the settlement, and miners agreed to return to work today.
