The federal government approved 389 charities, including 19 that had previously been turned down, as being eligible to take part in an employee solicitation drive that raises about $160 million a year from federal workers. Employees may designate up to five charities from a list that can number as many as 1,000. Among groups approved by the Office of Personnel Management for the Combined Federal Campaign were a homosexual group, the Lambda Legal Defense and Educational Fund. Also included were groups ranging from the Firearms Civil Rights Legal Defense Fund to the United Palestinian Appeal and Human Life International.
