New Trial Sought: Attorneys for the Home Shopping Network have filed motions seeking a new trial or a lowering of the $100 million in damages a jury awarded to GTE Corp. earlier this month. The jury ruled against HSN on Aug. 2 in its suit accusing GTE of selling it faulty telephone equipment and then trying to cover up the problem, and ruled in favor of GTE in its countersuit accusing HSN of libel. The jury ordered HSN, its chairman and president to pay $100 million to GTE. In their motions, attorneys for the television retailer said the libel judgment was without basis and was excessive. A hearing is scheduled for Nov. 28.
