LYON, France — Britain’s Colin Sturgess broke into an Eastern European domination as he won the professional individual pursuit title in the World Cycling Championship Thursday.
In other finals, Bill Huck defeated teammate Michael Hubner to keep up the near-monopoly by East Germany in the amateur men’s sprint race, and the Soviet women, led by defending champion Erika Salumjae, won the women’s sprint event.
Sturgess came from behind to take the five-kilometer pro pursuit race over Dean Woods of Australia. Sturgess was timed in 5 minutes 52.40 seconds, to 5:54.06 for Woods.
