Yankee Polonia to Be Charged in Sex Case

Share

Officials in Milwaukee announced that outfielder Luis Polonia of the New York Yankees will be charged with having sexual relations with a minor in connection with an incident with a 15-year-old girl at a downtown hotel.

John DiMotto, Milwaukee County assistant district attorney, said he was told by Polonia’s lawyer that the ballplayer would plead no contest to the misdemeanor charge during a court hearing Monday.

The charge carries a maximum penalty of nine months in jail and $10,000 in fines. Under Wisconsin law, an adult may not have sexual relations with a child under the age of 16 even if the child consents.

DiMotto said the girl involved will turn 16 in about 10 days. Polonia told police that he was told the girl was 19 after meeting her before Tuesday’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers.

A criminal complaint released by DiMotto said the girl said she and Polonia engaged in sexual activity twice, once before the girl’s mother called the hotel and talked to Polonia and once after the phone call.
