Consortium Wins Pact for ‘Smart’ Warhead

WASHINGTON —
A consortium of U.S., West German, French and British companies has been awarded a $479-million contract to develop a “smart” warhead for NATO’s Multiple-Launch Rocket System, the Pentagon said.
The planned terminal-guidance warhead, designed to seek and destroy enemy armor, will be developed by Martin Marietta Corp., Diehl GmbH of West Germany, Thomson CSF of France and Thorn EMI Electronics Ltd. of Britain.
The multiple-launch rocket system can launch several of the same kinds of rockets simultaneously.
