Solution to Military Crisis Expected

BUENOS AIRES — Argentina will unveil its plans for dealing with the leaders of recent army uprisings and human rights violations within the military by the end of next month, Interior Minister Eduardo Bauza said Friday.
“The solution to the military problem will have to come in the next few days or during September,” Bauza told reporters.
President Carlos Saul Menem said recently that he could grant pardons to military officers convicted or under trial for human rights violations during the 1970s’ “dirty war” against leftist rebels and political dissidents. Junior officers staged three rebellions in the past two years to press the government to halt trials of soldiers accused of rights violations.
A pardon would also benefit former leftist guerrillas like Mario Firmenich, who is serving a 30-year sentence for kidnaping and homicide, government sources said.
