Kraft Will Buy Fat Substitute From NutraSweet

Kraft Foods will buy an experimental fat substitute from NutraSweet Co. to use in making mayonnaise and Miracle Whip, the two companies have announced.

Skokie, Ill.-based NutraSweet announced the development of the fat substitute Simplesse, which is made from egg whites and skim milk, last year but the substance has not yet received Food and Drug Administration approval.

Kraft has developed its own fat substitute--Trailblazer--but it plans to use that substance in frozen desserts, saying the Simplesse formula is more suited to mayonnaise.

Neither company put a price tag on the deal.
