16 Saddleback College Paramedic Graduates Honored

A special graduation was held at Saddleback College to honor the 16 members of its paramedic program, which took six months to complete and included 1,140 hours of study and field internship.

The graduates are Randy Abrahamson and Ric Schultz, both of Irvine; Robert Acosta, Santa Ana; Bill Banning and Steve Miller, both of San Clemente; Mary Ellison, Los Alamitos; Eric Engberg, Vista; Mark Huckabey, Cypress; Steen Jensen, Laguna Hills; Brian Knott, South Laguna; Jeeter McAlpin, Orange; Mike McClanahan, Sunset Beach; Marc Pearson, Laguna Niguel; Lynn Shea, Mission Viejo; Dave Steffen, Long Beach, and Robert Stumm, Huntington Beach.

Fifteen of the graduates are now affiliated with county and city fire departments, and six are independent emergency medical technicians eligible for work with private paramedic agencies. The college is the only provider of paramedic training in Orange County.

Sean M. Flynn, a 1988 graduate of Foothill High School in Santa Ana who is now at Pitzer College in Claremont, was presented a $2,000 scholarship from West Publishing Co., based in St. Paul. The company gives the awards on the basis of academic record, potential and participation in school and community activities. He is the son of Karen B. Shuey of Santa Ana.

The Volunteer Center of Orange County Central/South has named Kathryn Thompson as winner of its 1989 Giving Is Living Award in recognition of her leadership in volunteerism.

Thompson, president and chief executive officer of her own building and development company, was cited for her leadership in philanthropic and public service organizations throughout Orange County.

She serves in various capacities with organizations such as Orangewood Children’s Foundation, Orange County Performing Arts Center, United Way, Boy Scouts of America and the College of Medicine at UC Irvine. She will be honored Nov. 16 at an awards dinner.

The Orange County Council of American Italian Women donated $1,000 to the St. Francis Home in Santa Ana, which feeds and houses elderly people; $600 to the Interval House in Seal Beach for its battered women and children’s program, and $600 to the Interval Transitional Living Center in Orange, which offers shelter to battered women and children.

Council president Maria C. Wilson said her group also gave $1,000 to the Orange County American Italian Foundation, which plans to build a center. The donated money was raised from the council’s fashion show.

Seal Beach resident Kenneth D. Yglesias, associate dean of instruction at Coastline Community College’s Westminster Center, has been named a Kellogg Fellow.

Yglesias and 16 others selected from a nationwide pool of candidates will participate in a leadership institute to assist minority staff members in mid-level faculty positions to prepare for senior-level posts in administration.

A career educator, Yglesias has taught at high school and college levels, including El Camino in Torrance, Pepperdine University and Cal State Long Beach.

Laguna Hills High School students Kate Lockwood and Jennifer Lackey have been named winners of the 1989-90 musical scholarships awarded annually by the Richard Rodgers chapter of the Guilds of the Orange County Performing Arts Center.

Lockwood’s award provides her with a two-week session at Idyllwild School of Music and Arts at Idyllwild. Lackey’s award enables her to attend the Berkelee College of Music in Santa Fe, N.M.

The team of Sherry Sears. Daliah Habib and Willie Baily of Fantastic Sam’s, in El Toro, took top honors in the company’s recent seventh annual International Styling Competition in Memphis.

Twenty teams from the United States and Canada competed for the $1,500 first-place award, which was shared equally by the three stylists. Habib also won an additional $500 by being named best female model.
