Soviet and U.S. scientists, politicians and entertainers on Saturday urged their governments to forge an “environmental security alliance” to combat global warming.

Robert Redford, co-sponsor of the four-day conference with the Soviet Academy of Science, read a letter to President Bush and Soviet President Mikhail S. Gorbachev.

“The United States of America and the U.S.S.R. are the two largest producers of greenhouse gases” thought to cause global warming, Redford said. “We should provide the leadership in the search for common solutions to the global warming problem as well as for the environmental security of the world.”
