About 180 East Germans crossed the Hungarian border into Austria in a 24-hour period over the weekend, despite increased attempts by Hungarian officials to stop them, officials in Vienna said. Austrian police in Eisenstadt, about 10 miles north of the border, said new refugees were arriving despite Hungarian attempts to keep cars with East German license plates away from the boundary, the Austrian Press Agency said. West German officials estimate more than 5,000 East Germans have fled through Hungary since July in efforts to reach West Germany.
