Contras in U.S.

Share

The Times editorial on Nicaragua (“Major Step Toward Peace,” Aug. 8) is right on target, except for the last item, on admitting Contras to this country as refugees. There The Times is completely wrong.

This country has paid dearly for the lesson we have learned from taking in anti-Castro Cubans after the Bay of Pigs invasion. They have been involved, through organizations like Alpha 66, in various clandestine and illegal activities such as Watergate. They have terrorized leftist groups in this country for exercising their legal, constitutional rights. They have been involved in aiding the Contras--even, apparently, in paramilitary activities in southern Florida.

Even when anti-Castro Cubans have acted legally, their thrust too often has been to try to involve this country in further wars.

The last thing this country needs is any more warmongers, plotters, terrorists and military adventurers.

This country has already done far too much for the Contras. We owe them nothing more. They are definitely not welcome here.
