About 37,000 Ameritech workers in five Midwest states are headed back to work with the settlement between 12,800 workers and Michigan Bell. NYNEX is the last regional phone company still on strike. Ameritech’s operators, repair crews and other union employees in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio had said they would stay off the job until settlements were reached in each state. The strike at Chicago-based Ameritech began Aug. 13, a week after strikes began at three other “Baby Bell” regional telephone companies.
