More than 10,000 Poles roared their approval as Lech Walesa joined them to celebrate the ninth anniversary of the birth of Solidarity and pray for the success of the new Solidarity-led government. Solidarity, the East Bloc’s first independent trade union, emerged this year from more than seven years of banishment. “We reject the road of violence and revolution, but we have the right to use legal measures,” Walesa told the crowd in Gdansk, where the union was born in 1980.
