The South Tahoe Public Utility District board has approved a proposed expansion of a sewage treatment plant as part of an agreement that will forestall lawsuits from the California attorney general and the League to Save Lake Tahoe. The $823,000 plant expansion will boost treatment capacity from 7.5 million to 7.7 million gallons daily and is needed to meet residential and commercial developments allowed through 1996, officials said. Enough capacity will be added for about 800 homes and about 1,000 commercial and recreation locations. Before the project can take place, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency must certify that adequate progress is being made on improvements such as replacement of a leak-prone sewage line near the Upper Truckee River. The agreement with California Atty. Gen. John K. Van de Kamp requires that engineering studies for the $9-million pipeline replacement job start in fiscal 1991-92.
