Britain and Spain Ready to Provide Assistance for Bogota’s Crackdown
The British government pledged Saturday to help Colombia in its crackdown on drug traffickers.
The British Foreign Office said Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher had promised Colombian President Virgilio Barco Vargas increased assistance in a letter delivered by Britain’s ambassador to Colombia, Richard Neilson, in Bogota on Friday.
Details of the assistance will be discussed with Colombian officials, the Foreign Office said, but added that the aid will focus on providing drug detection equipment and protecting the Colombian judiciary.
In Madrid, Foreign Minister Francisco Fernandez Ordonez said Spain is prepared to provide Bogota with unspecified help in its crackdown on the country’s drug cartels.
