Hungarian Communist Party chief Karoly Grosz said his party will not use force to hold onto power if it loses the nation’s first multi-party elections next year, a Finnish newspaper reported. In an interview with the daily Helsingin Sanomat, Grosz acknowledged that Hungarian Communists want to wield power. However, he said the party “would not use tanks but political arguments to get back into power” if it loses the vote, due to be held at the latest in 1990. Grosz also said he will step down as party general secretary during a party congress Oct. 6 but will continue to be active in politics. Grosz is in Finland to meet with President Mauno Koivisto.
