Ex-Goldman Sachs Official Pleads Guilty: Robert Freeman, the former head of risk arbitrage at Goldman, Sachs & Co., pleaded guilty to one count of mail fraud in connection with insider trading in shares of Beatrice Cos. The plea was entered in U.S. District Court before Judge Pierre Leval in New York under the terms of a plea-bargaining agreement announced three weeks ago. Sentencing is set for Nov. 16. Freeman, who was arrested 2 1/2 years ago and insisted until very recently that he was innocent, faces up to five years in prison and fines totaling $1.9 million. He is charged with trading in shares of Beatrice Cos. in January, 1986, with the benefit of information not available to the investing public. At the time, Beatrice was the target of a leveraged buyout by Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co.
