MIAMI —
Hurricane Gabrielle churned toward Bermuda and the East Coast with winds of 135 m.p.h. today, raising 10-foot swells up to 1,300 miles away on North Carolina’s Outer Banks.
Gabrielle’s 500-mile-wide spiral bypassed the Caribbean and was expected to reach Bermuda by Friday or Saturday. The island got 15-foot swells today.
Already the Atlantic season’s biggest hurricane, it was upgraded overnight to a Category 4 hurricane, with 5 the strongest.
