Regulator Criticized: The General Accounting Office, the investigative arm of Congress, said the Commodity Futures Trading Commission lacks ability to effectively analyze information on trading abuses and needs to work closely with futures exchanges as they develop automated surveillance systems to stop cheating. The report comes on the heels of recent sharp congressional criticism of the CFTC’s alleged lax regulation of markets, a charge it has denied.
