Tens of thousands of people, many wearing black armbands, rallied in Hong Kong to cheer escaped leaders of China’s pro-democracy movement on the 100th day since its suppression. Many of the British colony’s favorite pop singers performed during a nearly three-hour concert. Wuer Kaixi, a Beijing student leader and one of China’s most-wanted activists, addressed the crowd by long-distance telephone from an undisclosed location, saying democracy will come to China, “but it’s going to be a long and difficult road.” Hong Kong police estimated the crowd at more than 20,000, while organizers said it could be as many as 50,000.
