Leader Says Jamaica Will Resume Cuba Ties

ROME — Jamaica plans to re-establish diplomatic relations with Cuba after a nine-year break, Prime Minister Michael Manley said Wednesday.
In an interview during an official visit to Rome, Manley said, “We are in discussion with them (Cubans) now, and when we’ve worked out the modalities, relations will be resumed.” Asked when, he replied: “It will take a few months.”
Former Prime Miniser Edward Seaga severed diplomatic ties with Cuba in 1980, accusing Havana of interference in Jamaica’s internal affairs. Manley, a once-fiery socialist, assumed office in February.
