The Soviet Union reported that Israel launched a ballistic missile with an 800-mile range from the Jerusalem area into the Mediterranean between Libya and Greece. Israeli officials neither confirmed nor denied the report by the Soviet news agency Tass that the rocket fell about 250 miles north of Benghazi, Libya. In Athens, Greece’s National Defense Ministry refused comment on other reports that the missile landed in the sea west of Crete. In July, 1987, Radio Moscow accused Israel of developing a nuclear-capable missile, the Jericho II, with a range of 920 miles.
