Afghan insurgents said they stopped two government supply convoys that tried to run a guerrilla blockade on the Salang Highway, which links Kabul with the Soviet Union. Rebels under Ahmed Shah Masoud also captured a string of government posts, according to reports reaching Pakistan. There was no independent confirmation. In Kabul, the government released Henri-Xavier Lemire, 33, a French aid worker captured Aug. 14 while traveling with a guerrilla convoy 95 miles west of Kandahar. He said he was delivering prosthetic devices, wheelchairs and other medical equipment.
