The Salvadoran government and leftist rebels reached an agreement today calling for monthly talks mediated by the Roman Catholic Church to end their nation’s 10-year-old civil war, officials said.

A text of the agreement calls for talks every month, probably in Costa Rica, to work out details of a cease-fire, of legalizing the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front guerrillas as a political party and of integrating the fighters back into civilian life.

Church leaders will act as mediators during the talks, which will also be monitored by international observers, unless both sides agree that a specific meeting should be private, sources close to the negotiations said.
