Coe Says He Will Retire From Track in January
Sebastian Coe, one of the greatest runners in the history of track and field, will give himself “one more shake of the dice,” then retire from the sport.
The English middle-distance runner, who set 12 indoor and outdoor records between 1979 and 1983, said he will make his final appearance at next January’s Commonwealth Games in Auckland, New Zealand, where he wants to win “the one medal I don’t have.”
After that, he said, he planned to embark on a political career as a member of Britain’s governing Conservative party.
“Those competitive outings will be a wrench to lose,” said Coe, who turns 33 on Sept. 29. “But like all things, there is a right time in a career to move on. Athletics at a world-class level is a long, hard unremitting slog that does not allow for other things.”
