Brea : Potential Bone Marrow Donors Will Be Tested
More than 700 people wishing to donate bone marrow for Brandon Oba, 16, of Brea, and Anissa Ayala, 17, of Walnut will be tested on Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m., and on Monday and Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. in Brea.
The teen-agers suffer from chronic myelogenous leukemia. The only possible cure, doctors say, is a marrow transplant. It is estimated that the marrow of only one in 20,000 people will be a perfect match.
The volunteers have responded to a publicity campaign about the teen-agers’ plight. The testing will be done at the Mature Health Resources Foundation, 471 W. Lambert Road, Suite 105.
Brea Community Hospital has tested 125 of its employees, and Brea Noon Rotary has tested 20 of its members.
The long-term survival rate for chronic myelogenous leukemia sufferers who receive marrow transplants is more than 70%.
