Oxford and Cambridge universities in England brought their 160-year-old rowing rivalry to the Chicago River for their first race in the United States.

Oxford won by less than half a length.

“Only London counts, but all of them matter,” Oxford rower George Cheveley said. “We don’t ever want to lose to Cambridge.”

The annual London race on the Thames in March is the sole factor in the official win-loss record tabulated since 1829--69 victories for Cambridge, 66 for Oxford, with the latter winning 14 of the last 15 matches.
