The Soviet Union has suspended grain purchases abroad while it implements a plan to pay its farmers in foreign currency for above-average production, the head of the grain-buying agency Exportkhleb said today.

“At the present time we are not going to buy anything. We will buy from our state and collective farms,” Oleg Klimov said when asked whether Moscow would buy any more grain abroad this year.

The Soviet Union, the world’s largest grain importer, announced last month that it would start paying grain farmers partially in foreign currency to slash agricultural imports and boost domestic production.
