Three Los Angeles County educators are recipients of $25,000 California Educator Awards, state Supt. of Public Instruction Bill Honig has announced.

Garfield High School mathematics teacher Ben Jimenez and curriculum specialist Cosetta Moore, both of the Los Angeles Unified School District, and arts teacher Barrie Becker of the Dorothy Kirby Center School, a special county school, were among 12 winners statewide chosen by the California Assn. of County Superintendents of Schools and the state Department of Education.

Honig said Becker was chosen because of her work teaching dance to juvenile delinquents, while Jimenez’s efforts teaching college preparatory math to inner-city students has resulted in a 98% pass rate on advanced placement calculus exams. Moore, who oversees social science instruction for Los Angeles district elementary schools, helped develop a curriculum that incorporates community resources.

The awards, which are funded by the Milken Family Foundation, aim to increase public support of education by honoring individual contributions, Honig said.
