P.M. BRIEFING : Las Vegas Musician Union Talks Fail

LAS VEGAS — Negotiations between striking musicians and five Strip resorts collapsed Tuesday night, with neither side predicting when talks might resume.
“We made a proposal that we thought, and hoped, could resolve the tape problem,” said the resorts’ chief negotiator Larry Levien.
But Musicians Union Local 369 President Mark Massagli said the hotel offer would mean the end of live music in Las Vegas showrooms. “It’ll be the tape capital of the world, not the entertainment capital of the world,” Massagli said.
Musicians struck the Tropicana Hotel on June 3 in a dispute over the use of taped music in production showrooms and guaranteed work weeks for musicians. The strike has since escalated to include Caesars Palace, Bally’s, the Las Vegas Hilton and the Flamingo Hilton.
