Permits for multifamily housing units have been issued at a more subdued pace this year, contrasted with 1988. After six months, permits for 4,742 such units had been granted, 31% below the number for the comparable period last year (48% less than 1987 and 45% behind 1986).

Although June’s 1,185 was the highest monthly total since last September, it is the lowest June figure for any of the last four years. The decrease has been caused most notably by the comparative lack of activity in the unincorporated areas of the county, although several cities have also seen their numbers drop dramatically.
