Varian Associates Inc. has formed an office of the chairman in connection with the process of selecting a successor to Thomas D. Sege as chief executive. Sege, 63, Varian’s chairman as well, intends to step out of the chief executive’s role before the age of 65. The executives who comprise the new office, which is headed by Sege, are: Norman H. Pond, president; group presidents Allen J. Lauer and Richard M. Levy, both of whom have been elevated to senior vice presidents, and Robert A. Lemos, vice president and chief financial officer. In a related step, Al Wilunowski, 42, has been promoted to corporate vice president and named president of the Electron Device Group, Varian’s largest core business. He was previously vice president-microwave tube operations. Robert Holzel, 55, has been appointed assistant president of the Semiconductor Equipment Group.
