A large Pittston Coal Group processing plant occupied by striking miners for three days resumed production and United Mine Workers members said they accomplished their aim of drawing attention to their contract dispute. On Sunday, 98 striking miners and a clergyman entered the Moss No. 3 coal processing facility in Carbo, Va., and locked themselves inside the control room. The miners had vowed to stay 10 days but a federal judge ordered them to vacate the plant by 7 p.m. Wednesday. About 1,700 Pittston miners in Virginia and West Virginia walked out April 5 after working 14 months without a contract.
