BEIRUT — Gunmen assassinated a member of the Lebanese Parliament in Syrian-patrolled West Beirut on Thursday in a daring daylight attack.
Nazem Kaderi, 73, was killed by four men who fired a fusillade of bullets as the veteran conservative Sunni politician left a barbershop and opened the door of his chauffeured Mercedes on a crowded street, police and witnesses said.
A bodyguard fired at the four men carrying automatic rifles, and they killed him, police said.
Kaderi was the second leading Sunni figure assassinated since May, when Sheik Hassan Khaled, the mufti of the Sunni community, was killed by a bomb in West Beirut.
Kaderi--like Khaled--renounced violence and advocated the reunification of Lebanon and a Christian-Muslim dialogue.
