Typhoon Toll in China: 500 Dead or Missing
A typhoon that struck China’s southeastern province of Zhejiang last weekend left more than 500 people dead or missing and injured nearly 700, an official newspaper reported Thursday.
Typhoon Vera, the most severe storm to hit the province in 27 years, caused $351 million in damage and left hundreds of people homeless when it swept the area last Saturday, the English-language China Daily said.
The typhoon, accompanied by powerful winds and rainstorms, knocked out power and communications lines and breached dikes and dams, flooding millions of acres of cropland.
