Wendy Bruce won the all-around title at the U.S. World Championship team trials, earning one of eight spots on a squad that will compete in the women’s world gymnastics championships next month in West Germany.

Bruce, 16, of North Lauderdale, Fla., won the floor exercise with a score of 9.662 points and placed second on the balance beam.

She finished with a 75.539 score in the two-day trials at Arizona State in Tempe, Ariz.

Brandy Johnson, ranked fourth in the world and the reigning U.S. champion, missed the trials with a viral infection.

Johnson, of Altamonte Springs, Fla., won the U.S. Championships at Minneapolis in July and her 77.020 points counted for her score here.

None of the 15 other competing gymnasts could top Johnson’s total, so she made the team.

Joining Johnson and Bruce on the U.S. team are Christy Henrich, 17, of Independence, Mo.; Sandy Woolsey, 17, of Tempe; Chelle Stack, 16, of Huntington Beach; and Kim Kelly, 16, of King of Prussia, Pa.
